This weeks featured artist is Alf Whitby with his latest release ‘Lighthouse’

Whitby’s latest single Lighthouse was brought to my attention this week by a friend who recommended this track to me. I am so happy they did. It is a beautifully written and thought out atmospheric piece of music. From the intricacies of the finger picked guitar combined with Whitby’s haunting voice. If you are a fan of ‘Bon Iver‘ or ‘James Vincent McMorrow‘ then this track is for you.

Lighthouse’ is the beautifully ethereal debut single by Manchester-native (and easykill alumni) Alf Whitby, out 29th November on My Little Empire Records.”

This gorgeously brittle and emotive songwriting draws comparisons to the likes of Andy Shauf and Conor Oberst; with lyrical themes of feeling lost and directionless. Whitby wrote the song as “a comfortable twenty something, ill-content with everything and scrambling to figure out who I was and where I wanted to be”.It’s a bruised narrative, ultimately about expectations and how we frame what we strive for.

“The combination of delicate fingerpicking and lush wailing guitar make the perfect backdrop to Whitby’s vocals, ebbing and flowing between faltering falsetto and something which feels a little more hopeful.”

Taken from his debut album‘Sistine Dreams’ which will be coming early next year, Lighthouse is a hugely impressive first foot forwards for this hugely exciting emerging talent.
